It’s that special time of year with the holidays upon us, that I reflect upon the everyday miracles and positive impact that Kindred has had on so many vulnerable persons and at-risk animals.

My name is Marilyn Gough. I am a member of the fundraising team and I’ve been an Animal Care and Children’s Program Volunteer at the farm for over ten years. I am honoured to have shared in many everyday miracles at the farm—both big and small, animal and human—I cherish every one. These miracles haven’t come without struggles along the way, each time giving me an even deeper appreciation for what it takes for these miracles to occur.

I am sending this to you today because I need your help to ensure these everyday miracles continue to occur. 

With your help, daily miracles will become a reality for the children and animals that need it most…Maggie Mae is one of these everyday miracles.  

Maggie Mae came to Kindred in late July. She had been confined to a cage her entire life. She couldn’t stand at all and her feet were all curled up. She had no strength in her legs and she was so sad.

Within days at the farm she perked up, lapping up all the cuddles and attention as Kindred’s volunteers and children carried her around and hand fed her. Her daily therapy included transitioning her out of her wheelchair and supporting her to stand with her feet planted on the ground.

And, guess what? On October 23rd Maggie Mae, with all her strength and determination, took her very first steps.

This year children came to Kindred Farm for programs like: Camp Badger, SOS Children’s Village, Langley Education Centre, and benefitted from individual counselling sessions with Christine Mayworm, Clinical Counsellor and Program Director. 


Because of these programs, everyday miracles help change the way many vulnerable children in our community see themselves today. With your continued generosity, you will give hope to children, like Michael*, so they too, can feel valued, worthy and loved.

Michael is 10 years old. He has autism and developmental coordination disorder. This affects his daily life from speaking to eating and physical movement.


Michael came to Kindred Farm this summer and met Maggie Mae. He immediately fell in love with her and wanted to take care of her. They spent hours together. Michael held her and hand fed her.


Michael’s mom couldn’t believe the impact a chicken had on Michael. His behaviour was calmer and less irritable and he was excited to share stories about his day with Maggie Mae. Michael’s love for Maggie Mae and her love for Michael is just one of the everyday miracles at Kindred. Michael’s wish for Maggie was “for her to walk one day”

Michael’s wish has come true.

Maggie Mae is now taking her first steps, on her own.

But, Kindred has a wish for the future. We want to open our doors to more children like Michael in the year ahead, and we can’t do this without you. Our wish is to never have to turn down a person, or animal, in need—and that’s why we need your help today.

Please give generously this holiday season so every animal (like Maggie Mae) and every child (like Michael), has the opportunity to experience everyday miracles at Kindred Farm.
