A surprise birth

Six Babies

Sunday, October 21st, while the Sunday morning team were cleaning out the bunny house, they discovered a nest of baby bunnies!  There were 6 in the nest but one had already passed away.

So then the hotline started ringing – how could we have baby bunnies?? We were told our two Flemish Giants (Mystic and Luna) we rescued in the summer were female….well Luna was a boy.

Never having baby bunnies before, we had to quickly find out how to best support the mom in her care of 5 babies.  And Luna quickly went in for a neuter and was fostered by Rabbitat volunteer, Ashley for his post surgical care.

Two Babies Left

We did our best but Mystic had an upper respiratory infection and it quickly spread to the babies.

Three babies passed away which left two. For extra care and to administer antibiotics twice a day to Mystic and her two babies they went into foster care with Kindred volunteer, Anna.

Mystic & Apollo

After consults with Rabbitats, multiple vet visits and extra care, sadly only one baby made it.  We don’t know his/her gender, but we have named him Apollo.  Which seems fitting being the ancient Greek and Roman god of light, healing, music, poetry, prophecy, and manly beauty.

Anna is besotted by Apollo and the cuteness overload. She is witness to the mother/baby bond that we human moms can relate to. She has already taken hundreds of photos which I am looking forward to sharing.
