This was an emergency rescue and one that we scrambled to make happen.  People came to the farm with an urgent need to find a home for their two roosters in two days.  They are backyard chicken keepers and of course after getting baby chicks, a few weeks later it was discovered that two were roosters.  Which of course is no surprise to us…..anyone ordering baby chicks is going to get 50% roosters!

After they started crowing and a neighbour complained, the Surrey By-law officers were out in full force.  They gave the owners two days notice to remove the roosters or…..

It’s a very difficult situation when people show up unannounced at the farm in desperate need.  They were thrilled when we accepted their two handsome boys.  I had just moved Emmy Lou, Dolly and Miss Delaware into the new barn, so their delapitated chicken coop was vacant. They spent two weeks in there and are now in Olive Oyl’s yard and tucked into her house at night.

What is a surprise is they can FLY!  At first this was a huge concern to see where they would end up, but after getting to know them and seeing their gentle nature it’s quite fun to see where they end up.  I have asked our avian vet if it is ethical to clip their wings.  He says it is.  But we want to take our time to see if this is really necessary.

We’ve always had roosters at our farm and it is lovely to hear crowing at Kindred again.
